Nowcasts & Forecasts

Available Coverage Areas

Ecological Nowcasts and Forecasts are produced as data files at different spatial and temporal resolutions. We are currently tracking ten different variables and we produce daily images from the data. Use the menu to the right to find more information on the different variables and to view the images. For more information or to request data, please contact us.

Nowcasts are assessments of current conditions calculated using satellite data, meteorological data, and biogeochemical models of biospheric processes. These nowcasts allow scientists and resource managers to track everything from temperature to fire risk to crop quality. The nowcasts listed in the menu to the right are being produced using TOPS and the Ecocast architecture. Ecological nowcasts are currently available at global, continental, and regional scales, and new coverage areas are being developed..

Forecasts are predictions of future biospheric conditions calculated from satellite data, models of future climate conditions, and biogeochemical models of how terrestrial ecosystems will react to the conditions. Forecasts are currently being developed for many of the variables listed in the menu to the right.

Sample NPP anomaly image.Global
Satellite:  8-day MODIS derived products are available for FPAR and LAI at 0.5 degree x 0.5 degree resolution. Images may occassionally contain gaps due to missing data in the MODIS products.

Weather:  Daily gridded maps are available for global maximum temperature, minimum temperature, precipitation, vapor pressure deficit, and solar radiation. Data are derived from NCDC meteorological data and gridded at 0.5 degree x 0.5 degree resolution. Data and images may be lagged by 14 days or more depending on the availability of data from NCDC.

NPP:  10-day global Net Primary Productivity (NPP) anomaly maps are generated using the MODIS MOD17 algorithm at 0.5 degree x 0.5 degree resolution. These vegetation production maps are designed to provide an accurate regular measure of the growth of the terrestrial vegetation.

Images shown are for demonstration only. Please contact us to request data.

Sample temperature nowcast.Continental U.S.
Satellite:  8-day MODIS derived products are available for FPAR, LAI, NDVI, and EVI at 8-km resolution.

Weather:  Daily gridded maps are available for maximum temperature, minimum temperature, precipitation, vapor pressure deficit, and solar radiation. Data are derived from multiple meteorological networks and gridded at 8-km resolution.

Ecosystem Model:  Using TOPS and the Ecocast architecture, we currently produce daily 8-km nowcasts of Gross Primary Productivity (GPP) and soil moisture for the continental U.S.

Images shown are for demonstration only. Please contact us to request data.

Sample FPAR nowcast.California
Satellite:  8-day MODIS derived products are available for FPAR, LAI, NDVI, EVI and Land Surface Temperature (LIST) at 1-km resolution.

Weather:  Daily gridded maps are available for maximum temperature, minimum temperature, precipitation, vapor pressure deficit, and solar radiation. Data are derived from multiple meteorological networks within California and gridded at 1-km resolution.

Ecosystem Model :  Using TOPS and the Ecocast architecture, we currently produce daily 1-km nowcasts of Gross Primary Productivity (GPP) and soil moisture for California.

Images shown are for demonstration only. Please contact us to request data.
